David

After several years in private pediatric practice, it was time for change. I am proud to be a part of the Baylor Pediatric AIDS InitiativeDSC_0697 this year and happy to have my family joining me in Moshi, Tanzania.

Hi Dr. Bowe, your nurse at Polyclinic gave me this web site when I asked about you. My two boys, Rhys and Ian, saw you for about 4 years. Your work in Africa is amazing! The pictures alone are amazing. I’m glad to hear this experience continues to be rewarding for you and your family. We hope to see you back at Polyclinic but I wouldn’t begrudge you if you stayed in Africa.

    Take care!

    Hi David,

I just came across your blog this evening. I am a third year resident at Georgetown University Hospital in their combined Medicine-Pediatrics program. I have had my sights on BIPAI since starting residency after spending a few months in Lesotho and getting acquainted with BIPAI’s work there. More recently, last year, I read about the Child Centered Family Care at KCMC and I loved the idea of this clinic – it seems like the type of setting in which I would so much like to work. I plan to apply to BIPAI for the class of 2011 and I would love to email with you to hear about your experience in Moshi and any advice on how you came across this post. Thanks for blogging – I look forward to continuing to read!

  3. Bumped into this sight completely on accident while researching Africa. Recognized the name and thought, “could it be?” and there you were in a hospital in Africa taking care of sick kids. Wow! Look at what you’ve done with your life. It’s wonderful and amazing. It truly is.

    Dr Bowe,

Mireille wrote this blog url down for me on a piece of paper when I took the girls for a checkup.
Its fantastic to read about the details of Healthcare and Facts, and an incredible insiders account to the life there. Its something I always have wanted to do with my architecture training (helping build the infrastructure, clean water supply etc in developing countries). Its very encouraging to know you can still live a dream with grown children!

Its amazing what you and your family are doing, and great to see you all so happy and healthy.
All the best in your year ahead!

      HI Tanya,

      Thanks for the nice comments.

We are truly having a great time. It is hard sometimes but very rewarding.

The kids are doing well and yes you can do it with grown children. I recommend it.

I hope you are all well and staying warm.

      Take care,

      David

  7. Hi! I didn’t get your email because I changed my personal to my work address in the box and forgot to change .net to .org!

I hear Zanzibar is beautiful – what an amazing area. I sure wish I could stay longer but I have the Tessa factor to consider. She can say Tanzania perfectly and keeps saying, mommy I want to come with you! :)

I am leaving tomorrow, arrive on Saturday at 7pm. I’d really like to come out there- it would probably be later in the week (wed-fri) if that works for you, but I will definitely give you a call! I have a local number as well – it is 00255 (0) 759 334 328.

    Cheers,
    Melissa

  8. Hi Dr. Bowe! It’s Melissa, Tessa’s mom. She just turned 2 and I work at the Gates Foundation.

I’m heading to Arusha Tanzania for a conference this Friday — I’ll be in town for a week. I think you also know Steve and Lori Buchsbaum (their son is Max) — Steve and I work really closely together on this project called Grand Challenges in Global Health so he’ll be in town too. I didn’t realize how close Moshi was — I’d love to come say hello and see where you are working but I’m sure with limited time (for both of us it sounds like!) this could be a challenge. I probably should have looked you up sooner, but I’m a bit of a procrastinator!

If nothing else, I wanted to share with you a project we just launched that I think you would appreciate– it’s called Living Proof and it’s all about showing US policymakers that investments in health are paying off. We are really excited about changing the dialogue around global health to one that’s more centered on progress and possibility as we’ve found that this inspires people/governments to invest more. Take a look at http://www.gatesfoundation.org/livingproofproject/.

I think it’s so great what you are doing – hope the family is adjusting well and that you’re able to get out and travel a bit.

    All the best,
    melissa

      Hi Melissa,

I don’t know if you received my email and perhaps you have already left the states.

We are having a great experience here in Africa. Currently we are on Zanzibar.

I would love to show you (and Steve if he would like to come as well) what I am up to.

Moshi isn’t that far – about 1 hour by car. Don’t know if you will have a cell phone when you arrive but my number is 255 (0 without the 255 if you are in Tanzania) 716649985.

Call or email if you have a chance.

      Thanks for contacting me.

      David
